Barbecue Beef Sandwiches

3-4 pound chuck roast
2-3 onions, sliced
3-4 cloves garlic, minced or sliced
salt and pepper, to your taste
red chili pepper flakes, if desired
1 cup good quality barbecue sauce, bottled or your own recipe
1/2 cup water or red wine
hamburger buns
pickles, relishes, etc.

Place the roast in a casserole or heavy roasting pan. Arrange onion slices and garlic over roast, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and chili.

Pour on the sauce and water or wine. Cover. Place in 350 degree oven and cook for about 3 hours. You may need to reduce the heat to 300 degrees halfway through, if it seems to be burning.

The meat should pull apart with a fork. Serve, piled onto hamburger buns and garnished as desired. We always used sauerkraut.
